Nemi, the temple of the Goddess and the Emperor’s ships
Visita al Museo delle Navi Romane e al Santuario di Diana Nemorense
You will discover a place of extraordinary beauty which is worth a visit for its story connected to Rome and its ancient origins. On the shores of Lake Nemi, 30 kilometers from the Capital, the Roman Ship Museum and the Sanctuary of Diana Nemorense are two magical places to explore with our expert guides who will charm you with very interesting and ancient stories.
The visit will begin at the Museum of Roman Ships of Nemi and will continue with a walk to the area of the sanctuary. You will learn about ancient events of the lake basin, the mythological figures connected to it and the vessels built by Caligula, whose history is shrouded in mystery, because of “damnatio memoriae”, the condemnation to oblivion to which the emperor was convicted by his successors.
A story that, after millennia, is not considered concluded yet: at the beginning of April a new era of research has been inaugurated by the the municipality of Nemi.
A team set up by Ispra, Rome Coast Guard, CNR, the Carabinieri (Italian military police) with their scuba divers, the Castelli Romani Park and Harp Calabria started a new search for archaeological evidence and a hypothetical third ship, which could be still hidden in the muddy waters of the small crater of the lake. The results of the investigations carried out thanks to a high tech echo sounder will allow a detailed mapping of the bottom and of what has been so far hidden for centuries.
